    New Self-Propelled Gun

The Germans first deployed the Ferdinand self-propelled gun at Kursk in July 1943. During the battle, the Russians destroyed a number of Ferdinands allowing close inspection. Drawings and accurate characteristics were distributed to U.S. troops later that year in an Intelligence Bulletin article.

Tiger II

    Pantiger, A Redesigned Tiger

The Tiger II was first encountered by the Western Allies during the summer of 1944 in Normandy. One of the first intelligence articles appeared shortly thereafter in October. The tank was described as a "scaled-up Panther" and given a short-lived "Pantiger" misnomer.

A more thorough description of the Tiger II appeared in this January 1945 article on the 88-mm. Intelligence has adopted the British name "Royal Tiger" although the correct German designation "Königstiger" is also noted.
